Current & future projects:
London Metropolitan University 2009/10
Stephanie Schober teaches the Laban Movement Analysis module for BA Performing Arts students in their first year. The aim is to develop a basic understanding of the use of the body, effort, shape and space through explorational tasks. Throughout the course each student creates a short movement study based on observing a character of their choice.
Through autumn 2009 Stephanie created two ensemble works for the third year Performing Arts students:
'Two Group Studies'
Using movement and sounds, the intention was to find a theatricality based on harmonies and contrasts that develop between the individual dancer and the dynamics of a group. The two works were performed on 21st December at London Metropolitan University and will be presented again in July 2010.
Examples of past projects:
University of Northampton 2009
Stephanie Schober taught a Movement & Voice workshop to the BA Dance students as part of a workshop series at the university.
Dance Beyond Borders 2008 - 9
Dance Beyond Borders is a European training initiative for young dance artists, which took place over 9 weeks in the form of residencies in London, Lisbon, Hamburg and Antwerpen. Selected participants had the opportunity to develop a new short choreography, which was then performed at Hamburger Sprechwerk, Artblau in Braunschweig and at the London Metropolitan University in London. Stephanie was one of the mentors on this pilot scheme, teaching composition workshops and supporting the participants in their process during the London and the Hamburg residencies.
The project was realised through a partnership between ArtEZ School of Dance, Arnhem, Netherlands, DanceKiosk-Hamburg, Germany, Escola Superior de Dança, Lisbon, Portugal, London Metropolitan University, UK, Retina Dance Company, Antwerp, Belgium, SharingArts e.V., Network for Arts in Movement, Hamburg, Germany, and funded by the European Commission. Summer Intensives at The Place 2008
Stephanie taught a week long workshop at The Place's summer school, exploring ideas of combining voice and movement. The summer school is open for everyone with an interest in dance performance and the participants were from theatre, music and varied dance backgrounds.
Centre for Advanced Training at The Place 2008
Stephanie worked with young dancers aged 10 - 18 years, teaching one off workshops, which gave insight into her creative process. The Centre for Advanced Training at The Place is a government funded course for young dancers with exceptional potential in dance. To find out more about the programme visit www.theplace.org.uk/cat
London Contemporary Dance School at The Place 2007
Stephanie taught a week-long intensive workshop to year 1 and 2 BA dance students, giving insight into her creative practice.
The Northern School of Contemporary Dance 2007
Stephanie was a resident choreographer to create a new ensemble work with the year 3 BA dance students:
'Whiskey girl'
Inspired by the folk music of song writer Gillian Welsh, she directed the students to create their own movement, text and sound materials. The piece was created in a three week long intensive process. Singer Maria Jardardottir assisted her as a voice coach. The piece was performed at the school's Riley Theatre in Leeds.
Laban 2003 - 5
Stephanie created three ensemble works for the third year BA dance students:
‘Just once’ (2005)
'Solos for two' (2004)
'Inside us adaptation' (2003)
The pieces toured to regional colleges and venues. 'Solos for Two' was also performed as part of the International Dance Exchange Ruhr at Pact Zollverein in Essen, Germany (2004) and at Laban as part of an exchange with BA dance students at Palucca Schule Dresden in Germany (2005). The works each were created over an intensive rehearsal period of 5 weeks with the help of company dancers who taught technique class and assisted with the rehearsals.
London Metropolitan University 2003 - 7
Stephanie has an ongoing relationship with the BA Performing Arts course. This includes the creation of work with the students, regular teaching, performances of her company at the university and student visits to her performances outside of the university.
In 2006 Stephanie created a dance production with the year 3 students:
‘Nine voices, my song’
In this piece she collaborated with composer John-Marc Gowans exploring the dancers’ voices and personal movement material, resulting in an intimate performance for nine dancers at Jackson’s Lane Theatre. The students also assisted in the other aspects of production, like costume, lighting design and marketing and were mentored by Stephanie in all four aspects of the project: their coursework, performance, production assistance and essay.
During 2006/7 Stephanie taught a Body Conditioning/ Anatomy module to the third years, combining theory and practical studies.
